You're Hired! How to Get That Job and Keep it Too Nasha Fitter 9780143100577 Books

This book was very helpful for me; it focused on language, tone, and interpersonal skill building as the core of finding and then keeping your job. I have always been an average verbal communicator, and realized this has hampered my growth. What I liked about this book was it dove deep into specifically what I should do to improve myself. Lots of books give vague, open ended solutions, I felt this one gave me succinct, technical ways to improve my speech, intonation and flow. I really liked that all of the examples seemed to come from real life emails or conversations the author had collected. It was much easier to learn in this real and immersive way. this was way better than books that give you academic views, while this approach was far more practical and useful.

I really enjoyed reading this book, You're Hired. As an American expat working with a number of South Asian and African nationals, I found the section on interpersonal communication was one of the best I've read on the topic. The book gives actual dialogues between people - in both business and personal settings - and then points out mistakes that were made in listening, being empathetic, or getting your point across. It was such a nice way to explain such concepts as you can see exactly how the concepts should be applied. Most people get ahead because of their relationships, and this book talks about how communication can help you build such special relationships. I found it wholly useful and quite a simple and enjoyable read. Have recommended it to most of the people I work with.
If you are picking up this book hoping that it would help you navigate your way through the corporate jungle, then don't.

That was the exact reason why I bought this book. On reading the blurb, I assumed that it would be filled with interview tips and advise on how to overcome obstacles at work (obstacles like inter-personal relations, work pressure, &c). However, I was rather surprised to find that this is a book on English grammar and usage.

The blurb states

"Have you ever applied for a job and not been called for the interview? Ever wondered why?

Don't be discouraged! Finally, an easy, step-by-step guide, written specially for Indian job contexts and situations, is here to help. This book is all you need to take your first important steps up the corporate ladder.

Whether you are applying for a new job or want to perform better in your present position, You're Hired! How to Get That Job and Keep It Too will help you answer those questions you just didn't know whom to ask."

Nowhere does it say that the pages are filled with grammar and phonetic lessons.

This book would probably help if you come from a non-English speaking background and have no idea how to communicate in the English speaking corporate world.
Reading/buying this book would be pointless if you have a good/excellent command over the English language.
