The Leahy / Lahey / Lahy families of County Cavan have a long history in the County.
They are a distinct group of 'Leahys' isolated from the other concentrations of Leahy
families in Ireland. Several theories of their origins are explored along with
rationales and what little evidence that exists to support them. After many years
researching the Leahys in Cavan I have come to the conclusion that they (and Leahys
in neighbouring counties) are all related. I have studied Church and Civil records
along with census data, Wills and most importantly Land Deeds records as well as some
private collections and have been able to create a 'Top of the Tree' structure that
fits in with all the known data. There are still plenty of holes and isolated groups
that can't yet be connected, however I present what I see to be the most accurate
Leahy family tree in County Cavan from the late 1600s to about the year 1800.
This volume is about the 'Origins' and the most early Leahy / Lahy individuals
that are on record. Hopefully it might provide some insight to the Leahy descendants
worldwide who can't get much further back in their family history research than 'Cavan'.
A second volume will describe the various Leahy groups from 1800 onwards

The Cavan Leahys Origins eBook David Leahy

What a great book! This author has not only done extensive research on the Leahy family, but has included much history of Ireland and France as well. Many families have stories handed down to them, but it was amazing to find some of the same information in this book that had been floating around in my family for generations. David Leahy does a marvelous job following his own family story and includes resources only someone from Ireland could supply. Anyone interested in genealogy (especially Ireland and France), would benefit from this book.

The Cavan Leahys Origins eBook David Leahy Reviews

For anyone interested in genealogy, this book is an excellent example of how to present a family history backed up by factual material and rationale without losing the the very real stories of of the characters involved. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the subject.
For someone contemplating tracing my own origins I found this book refreshingly informative and a riveting read.
The Characters are brought to life with the many authentic entries. I particularly like the images and copies of the original old documents, photos etc that must have taken many hours of researching/deciphering.
A great read, even though I have no Leahy connections.

I’ve had a fascination with genealogy most of my life. My maternal lineage can be traced to the Roman conquest and occupation of Britain and Wales. My father’s ancestry however, being Irish, has been limited to my second great grandparents born in the early 1800’s in County Cavan, Ireland. This is very frustrating and is largely due to practically all the census records from the 19th century being destroyed in Dublin in a 1922 Civil War fire.

David Leahy’s book provides great insight into the origins of the County Cavan Leahy/Lahy/Lahey families. He offers several possibilities about our origins but the one I found to be most intriguing is the imposition of the Huguenots. This connects on so many levels of European history it just has to be authentic. The De Lahaye’s could be our founding family fleeing from the Saint Bartholomew’s Day Massacre in 1572.

The Cavan Leahys is much more than a genealogy reference, it’s about a desperate will to survive. I’m looking forward to David’s next volume and perhaps I can finally make that connection to the origins of the Lahey’s.
Detailed work of the Leahy's. A historic book...
